STATE REP. EARL POLESKI ANNOUNCES
RUN FOR RE-ELECTION

Friday, March 2, 2012

State Rep. Earl Poleski announces run for re-election Today, State Representative Earl Poleski filed paperwork with the Jackson County Clerk to run for re-election.

"Upon listening to my constituents, receiving their encouragement, and after careful deliberation, I have decided to run for a second term to serve in the Michigan House of Representatives. This decision is not about me or politics, it is about serving my fellow citizens, and I believe we are all in this together," said Earl Poleski.

Poleski was elected in 2010 and is currently serving a first term as State Representative for Jackson County's 64th House District.

"In the past year the legislature made significant reforms - some were easy decisions while some were not. However, leaders from both political parties took office at a time that required bold leadership in order to heal our suffering economy and get people back to work. Ending the unfair Michigan Business Tax was the first major step forward in the effort to make our state more job friendly and we got it done."

"Another priority was to fix a broken state government. That was the easy part for me. As a CPA, accountability is important, which is why I proudly supported reforms to pay down the state's long-term debt, eliminate lifetime benefits for legislators, and reduce legislative legislative office expenses by 18%."

"Now our economy is turning the corner but we have more work to do. Our future is bright and I am focused on finishing the job that the people of Jackson County elected me to do," Poleski concluded.

A Certified Public Accountant since 1981, Earl Poleski's career has included balancing budgets, keeping a watchful eye on spending, and protecting the financial security of his clients, neighbors and fellow taxpayers. Currently, Earl is a member of the Lally Group, PC accounting firm in Jackson. The Poleski family has lived in Jackson since 1973. Earl has been married to his high school sweetheart, Candy, since 1978. Candy's family has lived in Jackson for five generations. Together, they have two grown sons, Earl Wayne and John.

Unemployment numbers continue to fall

Governor Snyder recently announced the unemployment rate had fallen to 8.5 percent down from 8.8 percent the previous month. In addition, total employment in our state increased by 21,000, while the number of unemployed in the workforce declined by 12,000.

Our jobless rate in March 2012 is two full percentage points lower than the rate of 10.5 in March 2011. Michigan's unemployment rate has not been this low since August 2008. Over the past year the number of unemployed individuals has fallen by nearly 20 percent. The state's total employment level rose about 1.9 percent which exceeded the national average of 1.6 percent.

We still have a lot more work to do in our state but we are showing steady signs of improvement, which is great news for our state! The proof's in the numbers, Michigan is truly moving in the right direction.

The Michigan House Budget: Smart Saving, Sound Investment

For the second year in a row, the Michigan House has focused on eliminating wasteful spending and encouraging greater government accountability and responsibility.

In contrast to concerns expressed last year, smart budgeting and tax reform have brought about steady economic growth and government operations have remained largely stable. For the first time in several years, Michigan is expected to experience growth in revenue.

With additional revenue, the state is able to spend carefully in areas of proven return. Funding increases recommended by the House include $44.7 million toward higher education and community colleges, $50 million in upgrading antiquated technologies, $25 million in additional funds for local governments, $13 million for distressed cities and $11.8 million to fund additional Michigan State Police trooper schools.

Though surpluses do mean opportunities to invest, we must also remain committed to paying down the state's considerable debt and maintaining Michigan's rainy day fund. The budget calls for additional government efficiency though $223.1 million in state department reductions.

The budgetary process is not over, and with the House, Senate and governor each offering recommendations, we must continue to work together to focus on long-term success. The House will strive to once again complete the budget by June 1. Though it was hard work last year, the state is in a better position now thanks to that work done last year.

Be a part of Michigan's 4th Annual Park and Read Program

If you are looking for something fun to do as the weather gets warmer, look no further than Michigan's Park and Read program. The Department of Natural Resources and the Library of Michigan have teamed up for a fourth year of this special program. Through Park and Read, library card holders are able to "check out" a one-day pass that waives the Recreation Passport entry fee into any of Michigan's 101 state parks and recreation areas. You can use your pass for a wide range of activities.

Most parks loan hammocks so you can set up and relax. If you are looking for something a little more exciting, use your pass for free-one time access to any of the more than 500 events that are scheduled to take place within state parks this summer. If you need a rainy day alternative, the passes are also valid at any of the 11 museums and historic sites within the Michigan Historical Museum system. The passes are valid for seven days from check out and are good for day use only. The program runs through October 1st.

I encourage you all to take advantage of this great program. Michigan has so much exciting history and beautiful scenery to explore. When you use the Park and Read pass, you not only enjoy all those exciting things, but you also get everyone in the family excited about going to the library!

Ready, Set, Boat

As the weather gets warmer in Michigan, thoughts often turn to boating season. Michigan is really a boater's dream. In addition to the four Great Lakes, there are 11,000 inland lakes and rivers throughout the state. There are so many opportunities for recreational activities as well as chances to spot some of the hundreds of different plants and animals located around these waterways.

No matter what type of boating you are interested in, there is something for you. Michigan has over 7,000 miles of canoeable streams, 13,000 miles of trout waters, and 700 access sites. Before you head out, it is important to make sure you have everything you need, especially a boater's license.

Michigan requires you to have your boater's safety certificate before heading out on the water. Luckily for anyone who needs one, the Department of Natural Resources website has a few options for you. It is easy to search on their website for a class offered in your area, but if a time does not work for you, there is also the option to complete the class online.

For more information about boater's safety certificate requirements, or to find classes in your area, visit the DNR's website www.michigan.gov/dnr. Happy Boating everyone!

State buildings becoming more efficient

The Michigan Department of Transportation recently cut the ribbon on a cogeneration power plant that is transforming the way energy is provided to the 13 state buildings at the state's secondary complex. Two 1.2 megawatt natural gas-fired turbine generators are now producing the steam and electricity to necessary provide the heating and cooling for the complex.

This state-of-the-art system reduces the amount of power purchased from utility providers and amounts to about $1.6 million in savings annually. In addition to all the cost-savings, this new system will help make our state a healthier place. Cogeneration will result in an annual reduction of 10.4 metric tons of dioxide. This is equivalent to removing 1,700 cars off the road for one year or removing the carbon that would be absorbed by 2,100 acres of forest each year.
